The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) has officially released its Annual Work Programme for 2026, earmarking a total budget of €170.7 million to advance competitive circular bio-based industries in Europe.
This call, operating under the European Union’s Horizon Europe program, aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and industrial market deployment, replacing fossil-based resources with sustainable, bio-based alternatives.
The CBE JU is a €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC). Operating under Horizon Europe, its mission is to replace fossil-based resources with circular, bio-based solutions to help Europe reach its 2050 climate neutrality goals.
The 2026 work programme covers a wide variety of topics, from nutritional food ingredients to sustainable textiles. Funding is split across three types of actions:

Innovation Actions – Flagships (€20M per project): Focuses on first-of-their-kind industrial-scale biorefineries.
-
Key Topic: Diversification of nutritional food ingredient sources.
-
-
Innovation Actions (IA - €14M per project): Focuses on scaling up technologies from prototype to market.
-
Key Topics: Biotech routes for biomass, circular packaging films/coatings, and high-performance bio-based thermosets.
-
-
Research and Innovation Actions (RIA - €6.5M per project): Focuses on creating new knowledge and lab-scale testing.
